STACEY CAMP
Stacey spent the first two years of her formal education at OCAD and finished her Bachelor's of fine art at the Alberta College of Art and Design. After graduating in 2003 and moving back home to Ontario she has built up her cv showing her work in a number of galleries including the Engine gallery and TIFF. After a few years working out of the cotton factory painting, offering workshops and designing fabric, Stacey presently paints from her home studio in Niagara.
Stacey's abstract practice is inspired by endurance, the element of time, and beauty. Her paintings are characterized by their vibrant colours, bold in nature.
Her work aims to capture the essence of endurance, showcasing the ability to persist and overcome challenges by merely following a course of action in spite of difficulty. Working abstractly, obstacles are constantly presenting themselves as each mark finds its forever home. Stacey is often asked when she knows when a painting is finished. "The piece is completed as each shape and colour simultaneously lock in, just like when the correct combination unlocks a safe."
The dimension of time is reflected through the use of layers of paint and texture that convoy a sense of depth and progression. There is a gradient of mark making with paint either jumping forward, or falling more distant, dancing between levels of transparency. On each canvas time and space dance together in colourful maps of the past.
The bright and bold palette adds a lively and energetic touch to Stacey's paintings. She is addicted to the joy that colour brings her and uses each canvas as an unsuspecting outlet.
Enhancing and solidify flowers into the compositions. adds another layer of meaning and connection to the viewer as they often associated
with beauty, vitality and growth.
